Building owners could face unlimited fines for breaching fire safety regulations under measures announced by the government this week, which will come into force as part of the legislation in the Building Safety Bill.

Radical project governance reform demanded

Skills plan to end self employment in construction

New government mandates on direct employment could be introduced in construction within the next four years under a skills strategy for the sector published this week by the Construction Leadership Council. Lawyers say these mandates could bring many benefits, but would increase costs for contractors which should be reflected in the evaluation of tenders.

Rail risk fees reduction aims to boost investment

Cladding firm warned of fire danger 10 years before Grenfell

An Arconic marketing manager warned the company about the potential dangers of continuing to sell polyethylene-cored (PE) ACM cladding 10 years before the Grenfell Tower fire, after attending a presentation in which it was suggested a fire at a building clad in the material could kill 60 to 70 people.

Roofing lead cartel bosses disqualified

Three directors from two of the UK’s largest suppliers of rolled lead – used mainly for roofing by the construction industry – have been disqualified after breaking competition law through their involvement in illegal cartel activity.

New judge takes charge of Technology & Construction Court

Mrs Justice Finola O’Farrell has taken over as the new Judge in Charge of the Technology & Construction Court (TCC). She replaces the Hon Mr Justice Fraser in the role, who had been the Judge in Charge of the TCC since February 2018.

Loss of arm accident leads to £250,000 fine

A construction firm has been ordered to pay a fine and costs totalling £350,000 after a self employed, insufficiently trained ground worker lost his arm following an incident involving a disc cutter at a site in Cornwall.
