Government has “badly missed” its target for flammable cladding to be removed from high rise buildings, with the UK’s “not fit for purpose” building safety regulation system hampering efforts to improve safety, the Public Accounts Committee reports.

Director receives suspended prison sentence after fatal fall

A scaffolding boss has been given a suspended prison sentence and his company was fined after a worker suffered a fatal head injury in a fall from height caused by a collapsing scaffold.

Council wins again in waste plant dispute

A High Court judge has found in favour of Essex County Council for a second time in a dispute with the operator of the Tovi Eco Park waste disposal plant in Basildon over performance issues at the PFI facility.

Grenfell Inquiry hears call for products ban

An immediate ban should be placed on the use of any form of combustible insulation or cladding, the director of the specialist contractor responsible for the unsafe cladding system installed at Grenfell Tower has told the Inquiry into the 2017 fire, which resumed this week after a summer recess.

Disputes avoided after nuclear procurement failure

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has been praised in a National Audit Office report today for avoiding legal disputes since the failure, termination and subsequent renegotiation of a contract to manage the decommissioning of Magnox sites. But the authority needs to get a better handle on the cost of cleaning up the sites, it reports after the estimated figure increased by up to £2.7bn since 2017.
